内容記述 | The concept of the developmental state is seminal to analyzing both the economic success of East Asian nations and the failure to achieve such success at the same level for Latin American countries. The main argument here is that the internal political, social, and economic maturity of a society shapes the form of its integration into global society and international markets. The greater the maturity, the less vulnerable a nation is to external political and economic shocks. Thus, the analysis of the problems of economic development must emphasize domestic factors for the economic outcomes of a nation. These factors include primarily state-society relations and the balance of class forces within society. The configuration of social forces permitted the state in East Asia to coordinate local industrialists, international capital, and society at large in a national effort towards economic transformation. In so doing, it was able to shape, and not be shaped by, the international environment. This was not the case in Latin America where the state was essentially captured by outside interests. An alliance of local industrialists, labor, and the state, with the support of transnational capital, led the way towards a regrettable strategy of slow growth, inequality, and poverty. | |||||||||
