Three patients in a family living in Osaka requested treatment after having recognized the tapeworm strobila expelled in the feces. They were presumed to have been infected with broad tapeworm by having eaten the raw flesh of trout or salmon transported by air from Hokkaido. They had slight diarrhea but complained of no other symptoms. A slight leucocytosis with eosinophilia was the only significant blood finding. However, they were in deep pain and were seized with fear. Treatment with bithionol (Bitin) given orally in a single dose was successful and a total of 5 tapeworms were expelled (two tapeworms each from case 1 and 2, and one from case 3). Three mature tapeworms with scolex, and mature eggs obtained from the uteri of mature segments was morphologically and morphometrically investigated. All specimens were identified as D. nihonkaiense ordinary known as D. latum. |
