To elucidate this problem, cyclic tensile stretch was loaded on rabbit and bovine articular chondrocytes. Cyclic stretch reduced keratan sulfate release and enhanced glycosaminoglycan release from the chondrocytes into the medium. Cyclic stretch also reduced proteoglycan synthesis and protein kinase C was clearly involved in this action. Further, cyclic stretch enhanced nitric oxide synthesis, leading to the inhibition of proteoglycan synthesis.
