内容記述 The differences between the mesothelial cells activated by the presence of a neoplasm or by the inflammatory process were examined. The peritoneum was surgically removed from C57BL 6 mice that had been intraperitoneally injected with the inflammation causing agent λ-carrageenan (CAR), or with B-16 melanoma BL-6 or F-1 cells. The alteration of the activated mesothelial cells caused by both stimulations, inflammatory and neoplastic, was examined cytologically, histologically and immunohistochemically via light and electron microscopy. The mesothelial cells activated by the presence of melanoma cells revealed more significant cellular atypism than the ones activated by CAR. The appearance of the cellular atypism in the activated mesothelial cells by the dissemination of F-1 cells was observed earlier (7th day) than that of the BL-6 cells (10th day). No difference was seen in the activated mesothelial cells caused by the inflammatory and neoplasmic processes in terms of the proliferation of ribosomes, RER, vesicles, and villi. Membrane bound vesicles were incresed in number, and also accumulated along the basal border of the reactive mesothelial cells. The basal membrane of these cells showed increased striking tortuosity. ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 were both detected immunohistochemically in the activated mesothelium. The fibroblast-like cells in the submesothelial layer showed immunoreactivity of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1, which support the theory that fibroblast-like cells are potentially the reserve cells for mesothelial cells. In conclusion the mesothelial reaction shows characteristic features that depend upon the nature of the stimuli.
