Why did the Japanese agriculture, forestry, and fisheries industry not look into this until now? We examined why it is rapidly beginning to spread and how they intend to utilize GI (Geographical Indication) going forward. The Japanese government also noticed that this system could bring great benefits and began promoting the idea that the name “Nihon-shu” be used exclusively for sake made from Japanese rice and Japanese ingredients, and the name “Japan Wine” be used exclusively for products brewed in Japan using grapes grown in Japan as ingredients. By protecting our GIs in the EU, distribution and sales of sake made in countries other than Japan but indicated as “Nihon-shu” will be prohibited.
