[Synopsis] Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a vascular disease that involves progressive dilation of the abdominal aorta followed by its rupture. It is important to prevent AAA rupture since it has a high mortality rate. However, AAA development and rupture cannot be prevented medically. Studies have reported that AAA is closely associated with inflammation-induced vascular wall weakening. Recent studies have suggested that hypoperfusion of the vascular wall because of obstruction of the adventitial vasa vasorum affects AAA development. Furthermore, the abnormal appearance of adipocytes in the vascular wall could be closely associated with AAA rupture. These studies have also suggested that efficient regulation of adipocytes in the vascular wall might be an important strategy to prevent AAA rupture, and further studies might lead to the development of methods to prevent AAA rupture using therapeutic drugs or functional foods. In this review, we summarized the relationship between AAA development and diet. |
