| 内容記述 | [要旨]ウォートンの作品『子供たち』(１９２８) に登場するヒロイン，ジュディスは，ナボコフの『ロリータ』(１９５５) に先駆けて，自身の親と同年齢の中年男性マーティンが恋に落ちる「ニンフェット」として描かれている。本稿ではウォートン自身も幼少時に愛読した『不思議の国のアリス』に描かれた少女の１９世紀的アセクシュアルな少女像のイメージを彼女自身の幼少期の回顧録と照らし合わせて考察しながら，彼女が既存の１９世紀的少女像アリスから逸脱し，２０世紀的少女像のロリータのようなヒロインをジュディスに描いた点について，ジュディスにとってロリータの「ハンバート」となるマーティンとの関係を主軸に据えて論じている。 [Abstract] This paper discusses how Edith Wharton created her image of a “little girl” in the figure of the heroine, Judith Wheater, a 15-year-old teenager, whose half-child and half-adult behaviors have often drawn critics’ attention to the protagonist Martin Boyne’s almost pedophiliac attachment to her. In the paper, Lewis Carroll’s Alice from the 19th century, and Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita from the 20th century, the two most typical girl figures in literature, are respectively compared to Judith as well as Edith’s youth. I will then examine how similar or different Wharton’s descriptions of Judith could be to them. |
