So far, the argument on Japan’s influence on the writer has centered on gender issues. However, by closely examining how Carter represented Japan as the exotic other, we find that her writings not only abound in clichés and stereotypes of orientalism, but that her treatment of Japanese women and men is problematic. This paper examines Carter’s orientalism in her writings on Japan, and argues that her radical feminist views are closely connected to her experience in Japan.
