| 内容記述 | This communication-dramatic studies research article investigates whether a Japanese theater audience member is influenced more by their culture or by their English abilities when viewing plays performed in English. Speakers’ gender is also taken into account, because two of the four plays discussed are based on gender issues. First the author introduces the impetus for the study and provides a summary of Voice Kobe, the company that put on performances of seven one-act plays. The article then looks at what previous studies have surmised about audience roles in performances. It examines audience and actor interaction and how people of different cultures are influenced. Then, a brief explanation of the July 2012 production, followed by specifics on what the audience survey contained and how the survey was administered are given. Results of the survey follow. Conclusions reached include that English as a Foreign Language(EFL)speakers are affected more by their own culture than by their foreign language ability when attempting to assign meaning to a play performed in English. Furthermore, when a play is about gender issues Japanese-EFL speakers are more easily able to determine the meaning or central character. However, with plays that are more focused on individuals relating to one another, the Japanese-EFL speakers have difficulty deciding or understanding the theme or central character. | |||||||||
