| 内容記述 | "In this essay, we look into some differences between Nathaniel Hawthorne's private notebooks (The American Notebooks) and his public works, and extract contrastive pairs in imagery and notion, such as sunshine vs. moonlight, and moment vs. time. Reading his works The Scarlet Letter (including its preface ""The Custom-House"") and ""Young Goodman Brown,"" we find the relations between these elements very complicated, not merely contradictory but supplementary. By examining the relations, we can shed light on Hawthorne's theory of writing, such as moment as the crisis and the core of the story, which leads to his theory of living, his ethics." | |||||||||
