| 内容記述 | Nathaniel Hawthorne's story "Roger Malvin's Burial" consists of two parts which seem inconsistent with each other. The former part of the story is a realistic analysis of psychology of an obsessive person. On the other hand, the latter is a kind of myth, in which something like fate controls people. What this turnover means is the focus of this essay. Compared with psychological elements described in the former part, mythic elements found in the latter part prove to have characteristics totally opposite to the preceding psychology. In short, the mythic part is a logically negative formation inferred from what Hawthorne considers to constitute modern people's mind. The whole story thus offers catharsis to modern readers suffering from their own mind, implying a radical solution to their plight. | |||||||||
