[Synopsis] Shiro-ukon (Curcuma zedoaria) is cultivated for using healthy foods and traditional folk medicines. In recent years, only rhizome part of C. zedoaria is utilized for these objects, but the aerial part is disposed as industrial waste. Even disposing processes are costy and may also cause theenvironmental pollutions. In this study, we focused on the leaves of C. zedoaria as a bio-resource of functional chemicals for cosmetics with skin-whitening effect. Based on the SOD-like anti-oxidizing, tyrosinase inhibition, and prevention of hyaluronic acid fragmentation, we have been isolated andidentified two compounds, dehydrocurdione and curcumenone from the ethanol extracts of C. zedoaria. Both compounds showed as much efficacy as arbutin using showed skin whitening cosmetic ingredient. In addition, effects of these compounds on a melanogenesis of B16 melanoma cell line and a proliferation effects on NB1RGB cell line were showed, curcumenone was found to be effective in both tests. Though, curcumenone having potentially effective for skin care, is widely distributed in Curcuma spp. various species will be some bio-material for development of cosmetic ingredient. As the field of cosmetic and healthy food need new natural materials, utilizing the bio-material that has been disposed like the aerial part of C. zedoaria, will be reasonable and lead to promoting of sustainable agriculture. |
