内容記述 | [Abstract] To reduce Japan's overall CO_2 emission it is crucial for its urban areas, where most of its economic activities are concentrated, to become energy-efficient. Does an urban area become more energy-efficient or less as it grows? The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between three aspects of urban growth such as per capita income, population density and population, and urban per capita CO_2 emission. The regression results of an econometric model constructed to examine the impacts of urban per capita income, urban population density, and urban population on urban per capita CO_2 emission using the cross-sectional data of 712 Japanese cities for the respective years of 1990 and 2000 showed the following results. Firstly, urban per capita income and urban per capita CO_2 emission are likely to have the relationship taking an inverted U-shaped curve, namely an environmental Kuznets curve (EKC). Secondly, urban population density and urban per capita CO_2 emission are likely to have the relationship taking a curve of a negative exponential function. Thirdly, urban population and urban per capita CO_2 emission are likely to have a positive relationship. | |||||||||
