| 内容記述 | [Abstract] The Chimes (1844) in herits from A Christmas Carol (1843) the Plot of a protagonist who is haunted by Spirits in the dream world and given warnings that make him convert. Interestingly, Charles Dickens (1812-70) expressed sharp criticism of the social problems of the England of his time in The Chimes. At the end of the story he emphasizes the stern realities underlying this dream fantasy and concludes by asking the following question of the reader, "Had Trotty dreamed?" It cannot be denied that Dickens's writing in The Chimes lacks the verve, humour and fancy he shows in other works; however, his use of the supernatural theatrical device was very effective. Therefore, the line is blurred between dream world and realities. In this paper, I analyze Dickens's narrative technique by contrasting the world of dream he described and the real situation of the society at the time, and endeavour to clear Dickens's Inner motivation for writing this story. | |||||||||
