| 内容記述 | [Abstract] In English education in Japan a translation-oriented approach has been traditionally used in many Japanese high schools under the influence of college entrance examinations. However, there has been a growing shift today from the traditional approach to the acquisition of communicative competence, placing most English learning programs in Japan halfway between translation and communication skill development approaches. Under the circumstances, highly effective ESL education in Japan entails the selection or creation of most effective dictionaries that can improve learners' communication and translation abilities. This research demonstrates how effectively the corpus can be used to examine the effectiveness of Japanese-English, English-Japanese, and English-English dictionaries for English learners in terms of prioritization and categorization of words' meanings based onthe collocational frequency. The Corpus-based analysis of the semantic categorization and prioritization of the polysemic Japanese verb "suru" and the polysemic English verb "develop" provide suggestions about how to revise the contents of the above-mentioned dictionaries with the use of corpus data, which can greatly facilitate the development of Japanese ESL learners' communication and translation abilities [要旨] 発信型英語教育が唱えられていながらも、ある程度は、英語学習者の便宜を図って翻訳アプローチを取らざる得ない現在、効果的に学習できる、最も頻度の高いコロケーション(フレーズ)をカバーする辞書の選定や編纂が必須である。本論文では、ジーニアス、リーダーズ、プログレッシブなどの英和辞典8冊、プログレッシブ、ニューアンカー、ジーニアスなど和英辞典5冊、ロングマン、コビルドなど英英辞典3冊、計16冊の辞書に掲載されている定義や例文中のフレーズを使用頻度の見地からBank of English Corpus を用いて比較分析を行う。まず、lexicographyや言語習得に関する先行研究を概観した後、本コーパス研究の方法を論じ、次に、日本語の多義語「する」と英語の多義語 develop に関して、和英、英和、英英辞典における定義の効果的な分類と掲載順を、コーパス分析によって検証し、最後に辞書の改良に関する提言をしたい。 | |||||||||
