PABQ is prepared by refluxing a 1 : 2 mixture of 1,4-benzoquinone and 2-aminomethylpyridine in ethanol. PABQ reacts with cobalt(II) to form a water soluble complex which has an absorption maximum at 560 nm. The calibration curve obeys Beer's law over the concentration range from 0.1 to 2μg/ml of cobalt(II). The apparent molar absorption coefficient is 3.7×10^4dm^3 mol^<-1>cm^<-1>. The recommended procedure is as follows; To a sample solution, 1 ml of 10% sodium L-ascorbate and 5 ml of 10^<-3>M PABQ methanol solution is added, pH is adjusted to 6.5〜7.5 with ammonium acetate solution, and the solution is made up to 50 ml with water.
