In general, the theta-role given to the subject NP of a passive construction in Japanese is a patient ; however, as for the passive form of \"Home-rareru, \" the thetarole of a beneficiary is to be given to its subject NP. This paper asserts that it is possible for this \"Homeru\" type of passive sentences to be given a principled explanation if conditions of theta-percolation and theta-transfer are postulated. In this \"Homeru\" passive, a theta-role is to be percolated from \"Homeru\" to \"Jibun\" at D-structure, and then the same theta-role will be transferred to its subject NP, which is co-indexed with \"Jibun.\" All the other passive constructions allow \"Rareru, \" an auxiliary of the passive, to percolate its theta-role to their subject NPs.
