This report details our experience in the diagnosis and radical resection of a basaloid carcinoma (BC) of the lung through early surgery of a rapidly enlarged lung tumor. The subject was a 73-year old male who was found by his previous physician to have bilateral lung tumors. A diagnosis of adenocarcinoma was rendered for the right lung tumor but no definitive diagnosis could be made for the left lung tumor. The subject was referred to our hospital due to rapid enlargement of the left tumor and surgery was performed for definitive diagnosis and treatment. Pathological examination revealed the left tumor to be a BC of the lung. BCs of the lung are a subline of squamous cell or large cell carcinomas of the lung, and sufferers are typically said to have a poor prognosis. However, the rare histological type of BC of the lung indicates that cases are scarce, resulting in a lack of detailed studies on the subject. The pulmonary BC of the subject exhibited rapid enlargement, suggesting that the growth rate of the tumor may be related to the patient's prognosis, and that early diagnosis and treatment are essential for improved prognosis. |
