The seed, however, contains phorbol esters which exhibit tumor-promoting activity, and thus negative impact of these compounds on health of producers or consumers should be concerned_ In this study, tumor-promoting activity of I cur eas seed extracts was evaluated by the two-stage mouse skin tumorgenesis assay and Epstein-Barr virus early antigen induction assay. Our results showed that tumor-promoting activity of J. curcas seed extracts was significantly lower than phorbol-l2-myristate-1 3-acetate (PMA), which is well known as a potent tumor promotor. In addition, J. cur eas seed extracts were revealed to suppress the tumor-promoting activity ofPMA.
