Traditionally, in the patriarchal order, women were excluded from the field of industrial technology, where only men were considered to be able to manage and deal with machines, including automobiles. When Dorothy Levitt became the idol of the car-racing world, her expected gender role was to assimilate her feminine beauty with the car she drove, so as to attract potential male buyers.
