It has also been shown that learners actually find reading in a foreign or second language pleasurable; some learners even find it more pleasurable than reading in their first language. In this study, we explore changes in reading speed and comprehension over one semester, in addition to what extent students find voluntary extracurricular extensive reading to be beneficial. We show that students majoring in the life sciences do see benefits in participating and see increases in both reading speed and comprehension.
