Vacuum ultraviolet(VUV)light is the portion of the UV spectrum with wavelengths lower than 200 nm. One potential source of VUV irradiation is an Argon(Ar)excimer lamp, which produces narrowband light around a wavelength of 126 nm. To judge the effectiveness of 126 nm VUV light as a mutagenic source, we introduced the mutagenecity of VUV light on the moss Physcomitrella patens. The VUV-irradiated moss developed protonemal tissue with abnormal chloroplasts, and the leafy gametophores that developed from the irradiated protonemal tissue were morphologically altered.
