The paddy seeds were broadcasted in the stand of wheat on the water leaking experimental field in the first year. In the second year, however, the seeds were broadcasted in a dense stand of chinese milkvetch on the ill-drained experimental field which was preceedingly under the conventional paddy cultivation. Both the experimental fields were then left alone without any agricultural practices except some alternation of flooding and drainage until the paddy harvest in the second experiment. The percentages of the paddy biomass to the total plant biomass (paddy + weed) at the harvest were only 9.4% in the first experiment, while about 40% in the second experiment. The results show that in order to reduce the weed injury in the energy-saving agricultural practices without any herbicides, the following points may be important: 1) the well timed alternation of flooding and drainage, 2) introduction and establishment of cover weed such as chinese milkvetch and 3) practically, the rotation of the energy-saving paddy production and the conventional energy-consuming paddy production.
