U. Nef, an American economic historian insisted that there were two kinds of civilization in European history. One is the civilization that pursues the quality, in other words, the beauty. Another is the civilization that pursues the quantity, which leads to mass production. The latter is called the industrial civilization, which was born in the 16th century in England. On the other hand, when we glance over the chronology of English and French art from 1540 to 1640 during which the industrial civilization emerged, we can find the fact that there were a lot of historically important painters in France, but there were no preeminent painters in England. It is possible to relate one of the reasons of the fact with the birth of the industrial civilization, that is, the use of coal at home and for manufacturing in England.
